Atom Tractor Beam

Atom Tractor Beam

The arrangement of their atoms determines the properties of materials. To control these, researchers can either replace or rearrange the atoms. My name is Toma Susi, and my team at the Faculty of Physics of the University of Vienna uses an electron beam in a scanning transmission electron microscope to manipulate strongly bound materials with atomic precision —the animation above shows a real example. Because we use a computer to drive our microscope, also you may experience the frontiers of research in materials science!

Learn about the physical background, see the museum exhibition and performance, or try it out for yourself with our online simulation game.
